Does VI have syntax highlighting? I thought only VIM did...

vi -g has. But you might use the vim styles instead if you like ... Aren't they simular anyway?

I dunno. No harm in making both, unless they're both exactly the same.

This one is going to be interesting...

For example, the HTML highlighting does things like underlining stuff in <a> tags.

And if there are errors it can highlight them also.

And for PHP, it highlights the $ sign differentely for variables.

So there's quite a few things that would have to be dealt with.

I think this one should be suspended for now, unless someone who is interested in and familiar with vim wants to do it.
